The ABC 7 Blood Drive for the Bay Area

ABC 7 Meteorologist, Spencer Christian.

In response to January’s emergency appeal for blood donations, KGO-TV (ABC affiliate) in San Francisco, partnered with BCP to hold a week-long blood drive for the Bay Area.

During the week of January 10th, KGO’s drive, titled “The ABC 7 Blood Drive for the Bay Area”, featured live broadcasts from blood centers around the region. Reporters and anchors urged Bay Area residents to donate blood and kept a running tally of the number of units donated at each featured site.

KGO spent four days at BCP sites. Meteorologists Spencer Christian and Leigh Glaser broadcast their weather reports live from the Irwin Center, Marin Donor Site and Redwood City Donor Site and reporter Wayne Freedman, broadcast live reports from the Peninsula South Bay Center. Their broadcasts featured information about blood donation, interviews with donors and some light-hearted facts about donating.

The ABC 7 Blood Drive brought in more than 600 units of blood! And because the station went way above and beyond the call of duty, BCP is nominating KGO-TV for the Awards of Merit in the television category given out by the American Association of Blood Banks. BCP is also working to make the drive with KGO-TV an annual event!
