Burney High School Knows How to Give!
Melissa Spencer is a force to be reckoned with. Melissa organized a high
school blood drive for her senior project. Burney High School, in rural
Shasta County, has 222 high school age students. Melissa set a goal of
getting 100 students to donate blood. At her blood drive, on Valentine’s
Day, there were 105 registered donors! It was one of the most smoothly run
and best organized high school blood drives that we have seen.
BCP's Newest Star!
BCP's newest star, Associate Medical Director, Dr. Kim-Anh Nguyen, did a
great job in January appearing on KRON4 and NBC3 news. Dr. Nguyen and the
PR department worked with the media after a couple underwent liver failure
having unknowingly eaten “Death Cap” mushrooms. It was thought that the
couple's only chance for survival would be to have liver transplants. As
BCP was experiencing a blood shortage at that time, it was critical for us
to secure media coverage to get the word about the need for more blood
donors. Thanks to Dr. Nguyen, BCP received many calls and emails from
donors!
Facts About Death Cap Mushrooms
(Amanita phalloides)
- The Death
Cap is one of the most poisonous mushrooms known.
- They are
responsible for nearly all of mushroom induced fatalities.
- Symptoms do
not appear until 6-24 hours after ingestion,
by which time the toxins have been completely absorbed.
- They are
abundant throughout California, and have recently
been found in Oregon and Washington.
- Be safe!
Make sure you have positively identified your
mushrooms before ingesting!
Have a Story?
BCP’s Lifelines has a new look, and a new outlook. We are branching out to
further connect to the community. Do you have a story to tell? Maybe a
local blood donating hero you would like to recognize? Or maybe just a
good donating experience you had?
