A’s Fan Fest 2002 Blood Drive If you wanted fun, music, sports, and help save lives all in one location, the Network Associates Coliseum, Oakland was the place to be on Saturday, February 9th, 2002. As part of Saturn Corporation’s National Donor Day, Blood Centers of the Pacific (BCP) held a six-hour blood and bone marrow drive at “Fan Fest: A’s Style.”
National Donor Day, hosted by Saturn Corporation is a national one-day event, held in cities across the country to promote awareness and encourage blood, marrow, stem cell and, organ and tissue donations. This was BCP’s second year partnering with Saturn and the Oakland Athletics. That day, the Coliseum was a sea of yellow and green, with more than 26,000 enthusiastic fans sporting the A’s gear. Fan Fest featured autograph sessions, live music, question and answer sessions with A’s players, and children’s reading sessions, as well as a chance to donate much needed blood for Bay Area patients. A's players also came out to help in saving lives! Second-year outfielder, Germaine Dye, stood outside the donor room and offered fans to have their pictures taken with him, if they would donate a pint of blood. All-Star pitcher, Barry Zito, who is no stranger when it comes to the importance of giving blood, helped maintain a lively atmosphere at the blood drive. Barry’s mother received a lifesaving liver transplant and had previously used several pints of blood. The All-Star pitcher helped out at the blood drive by spending a lot of time in the donor area, chatting with donors, signing autographs and having his picture taken with fans. Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown was also present that day. By the end of the day, not only did everyone have an enjoyable time, but BCP also collected 98 pints of blood, almost double last year’s collection! Next year, we plan to top that by doubling again what we did this year!
