“4 Little Reasons” Campaign Launched
Carter, age three, was born 14 weeks before his due date, weighing only 1 pound, 4 ounces. “The blood was the number one thing that sustained Carter,” said his mother. Like Carter, twins Alexis and Jacob were also born premature. Born at seven months, the baby twins weighed only 2.5 pounds and 3 pounds respectively. After becoming anemic they required blood transfusions immediately and fortunately, were able to receive them. Today, at four and a half years old, they are healthy and normal thanks to the blood that was available during their crisis. Julius was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia at three months of age. At 10 months, he began receiving blood transfusions. Because of the likelihood of reoccurring pain and strokes, Julius continues to receive blood transfusions every four weeks. Hannah weighed just 2 pounds, 8 ounces when she was born prematurely at 12 weeks. Fortunately, after seven weeks of intensive care and five blood transfusions, Hannah was able to go home healthy. These are just a few of the heart-warming stories surrounding the impact blood donors have on the lives of others - and there are thousands more out there. We’ve found that sharing the stories of blood recipients, especially children, serve to motivate first-time blood donors and to keep regular blood donors coming back. If you have a moving recipient story that you’d like to share, please call Angela Woon at 415-749-6698 or email her at awoon@bloodcenters.org.
