She Did It!
Remember Lauren Larsen, the new mother who nearly lost her life after giving birth to her daughter in March 2000? Here she is, completing the New York Marathon, just a year and a half since she nearly lost her life after an emergency C-section and the birth of her daughter Clare. Lauren raised $30,000 dollars and more than 500 blood donations to raise awareness for blood donors! BCP is honored to know Lauren and her family, and we would like to share with you her own account of what it was like to run the New York Marathon, just a year and a half after her close encounter with death. Thanks to all of you who helped sponsor this courageous woman and for donating the blood which helped save her life!
“Well... WE MADE IT! Yep, we crossed that finish line –a little slower than predicted– but we got those finishers’ medals! About 12 of the 26.2 miles were sheer heaven– lots of fun to run, great spectator crowds all cheering for us. The fans tend to yell whatever you have on your shirt– my shirt said, “Hey, Lauren, you're alive!” and Jeff's shirt said, “Thank you blood donors!” It was pretty emotional at times, especially when I would imagine that I was running out of the ICU and all the spectators lining the road were my doctors and nurses from the hospital cheering me on. It was really great. Juxtaposed with the 12 miles of heaven, were 14.2 miles of survival mode. Not horrible, just not what I'd call “heaven.” There were no “medical incidents,” no liver issues, no need to call the ambulance. Had to walk about 1-2 miles of the course in order to stretch out our legs, but other than that, we were energizer bunnies –just kept goin’. Thanks again for all your well wishes and positive vibes. I’m sure it all helped. Really appreciate it! Cheers,
